In 2010, the municipality of Ipswich celebrates its sesquicentenary. The settlement was already thriving before the 1858 Municipalities Act made it possible to request formal recognition of the town. Ipswich was proclaimed and gazetted by the Governor of Queensland by 3 March 1860.
