The Australian Pig Breeders Association began as a group of Berkshire breeders that formed the Pig Society in 1909 for the registration of their stud pigs and for the advancement of pig husbandry in Australia. The industry contributes significantly to the Australian economy and provides many jobs for workers in the agricultural sector. Because of stringent quarantine regulations, Australia's stud pigs have low disease risk and animals have been exported to many parts of the world as foundation breeding stock and to improve existing herds. Today Australian pig breeding is an internationally competitive industry, due in no small part to the efforts of the Australian Pig Breeders Association over the last century.
