Queen Elizabeth II most recently visited Australia to open the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Her visit coincided with Commonwealth Day, which is held annually on the second Monday of March. Traditionally, the Queen, as Head of the Commonwealth, attends the multi-faith Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, from where her message is broadcast across the globe.
In 2006 the Queen delivered her address from St Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney. The stamp image shows her leaving the cathedral following the observance, where she is met by a loyal crowd. At St Andrew's she spoke about the pressing need to address issues of health and vitality in all communities across the Commonwealth and beyond.
