Taronga Zoo is celebrating the birth of four female Tasmanian Devil joeys, the first to be born at the Zoo in over 15 years. The arrival of the youngsters to mother ‘Martha' is a vital boost to the population of Tasmanian Devils.

Sadly the situation for wild Tasmanian Devils is not promising with the species recently listed as endangered due to a contagious facial cancer. Native only to Tasmania, it is thought there may be as few as 10, 000 individuals left in the wild as the deadly disease continues to spread west and north across the state.

Taronga Zoo is part of a network of national zoos and wildlife parks which are breeding an insurance population of devils free of disease to safeguard against a complete collapse of the species in the wild. It is hoped these four new females will go onto to have their own joeys, increasing the insurance population and creating a new generation of disease free, happy, healthy devils.
