Cricket was sent around the world wherever British soldiers, sailors and settlers went in search of markets, territories and imperial conquests. It especially suited the spirit of the Victorian period - the motif par excellence of the colonising moment. Cricket was seen as a legacy no less than parliamentary democracy and the English language.
The earliest historical references to the game of cricket appear in the 1600s when rules began to be laid down . The first record of cricketers appearing outside of England refers to a match in Syria in 1676 between the English navy and a team of British residents, whilst the first international match was played between Eleven of England and Twenty-two of the USA played in New York in 1859.
